Attics, crawl spaces and hillside foundations
A lot of Pittsburgh's housing sits on a slope, and the foundation follows it: a walkout basement on the downhill side, a low crawl space where the ground rises, a root cellar dug half into the hill. Animals use all of it. When one dies in there, this Pittsburgh line sends somebody who will go in and get it.
How a recovery actually goes
Find it
By smell, by insect activity, by where the space narrows enough that an animal could have gotten stuck. A crawl space or a low hillside foundation is a confined space, and the operator comes equipped for it.
Get it out
The carcass is bagged. Whatever it was lying on, whether insulation, dirt floor or old bedding, usually comes out with it. That material is what keeps the smell going after the animal itself is gone.
Deal with the spot
Where practical. A full crawl space clean-out or new attic insulation is separate work, and whether the operator offers it is worth asking on the call.
Show you the way in
If it was visible: a gap under a porch, a broken foundation vent, a soffit pulling away. Sealing it is a separate job.
Finished walls are a separate case
Getting a mouse or rat out of a sealed, finished wall means cutting the wall open, then patching and repainting it. That is construction work, and this line does not book it.
If the smell is coming from a wall that connects to an attic or a crawl space, though, there is often a way in from that side — say what you know and the operator will tell you whether that applies.
Worth saying on the call
- Where the crawl space access or attic hatch is
- Whether the foundation is a hillside walkout, a full basement, or a crawl space
- Which room or floor the smell is strongest in
- Any scratching or movement in the weeks before, and where
- A vent, soffit or foundation gap sealed recently
